All You Want To Know About Laryngeal Cancer

Cancer is a fatal disease that has been a major cause of deaths all over the world. Cancer can be of any part of the body like breast cancer, lungs cancer, and blood cancer, etc. To understand the disease; first you should know what actually cancer is and how it is developed.

Human body is composed of trillion of cells. The normal body cells grow, multiply and die in a proper way. In infants and kids, cells grow at a faster rate allowing the person to grow. After the person is fully grown, the cells divide only to repair damaged cells or to replace died cells.

Cancer begins when these normal body cells begin to grow out of control without following the orderly fashion. The cancer cells have damaged DNA which is the most important part of cell for normal body growth. Every cell produced due to abnormal cell growth has damaged DNA. Normal cells do not invade into other tissues, but cancer cells do. That’s why a cancer started in one part of the body has chances of spreading into other parts of the body.

Cancer is always named with the name of the body part from where it starts. If cancer cells begin forming in the breast, it is named as breast cancer.

Laryngeal cancer:

Laryngeal cancer starts from larynx which is located in neck. Larynx is also known as voice box. It contains vocal cords and helps in speaking.

Laryngeal cancer is more common in males as compared to females. Similarly, it does not occur at young age. Mostly, it occurs in elder people over 65 years of age. This type of cancer is reported to be more common in African American and white people as compared to Asian people.

There are many risk factors associated with laryngeal cancer.  One of the major risk factor is tobacco. The chances of laryngeal cancer in smokers are far more than in non-smokers. Poor nutrition is also a risk factor. Vitamin deficiencies may also cause the laryngeal cancer. The alcoholic people are more prone for developing laryngeal cancer. Another major risk factor is the weak immune system. The people, who have weak immune due to deficiency of white blood cells or poor nutrition, have more chances of getting laryngeal cancer.

Once the laryngeal cancer is developed, it may not be cured. So the best way to avoid laryngeal cancer is to avoid known risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol. Avoiding smoking and alcohol can reduce the risk of laryngeal cancer to a greater extent. Ensure proper ventilation of your workplace. Especially there should be proper ventilated workplace of people who are more exposed to cancer causing chemicals. In such places, use of industrial respirators is highly recommended to deter any chances of developing laryngeal cancer.

Some of the common symptoms of laryngeal cancer are change in voice, sore throat, trouble in swallowing, coughing, ear pain, and weight loss.  If you have any of these symptoms, immediately check with doctor as a cancer diagnosed at early stage has more chances of being cured.
